The Data Science Hype: A Critical PerspectiveYes, you read that right. Today, I'm shedding light on what I perceive as the "scam" surrounding data science and the misleading promises made by certain educational institutes. Upon graduating, many students find themselves at a crossroads, unsure of which career path to choose. During this period of uncertainty, they often encounter YouTube videos portraying dramatic success stories—individuals allegedly transitioning from a 3 LPA (Lakhs Per Annum) salary to 25 LPA within six months.Numerous institutes exploit this uncertainty by offering data science courses with exorbitant fees, often exceeding 1-2 lakhs. In the face of unemployment, countless fresh graduates are drawn to these programs. However, the harsh reality is that only a small fraction of these students secure their ideal jobs.Several YouTubers, aiming to increase their follower counts, produce a plethora of videos featuring interviews with candidates who share their success stories. These narratives often highlight extraordinary transitions from entirely unrelated fields to data science within six months, boasting salary hikes of 200%. While not all of these claims are outright fabrications, it's important to note that the actual success rate for such transitions hovers around 1-2%. Only a tiny percentage of individuals manage to establish a successful career in data science within such a short timeframe. It's crucial to recognize that each person has a unique mindset and set of abilities. Excelling in data science is not the only pathway to success. You may discover that your strengths and passions lie in a different domain, leading you to achieve remarkable success elsewhere. Our society often demands swift success, sometimes within a mere month or year. I urge you to follow your passion rather than succumbing to the rat race. Ultimately, everyone possesses distinct mindsets and capabilities. Take the time to analyze your own strengths and aspirations, and forge a path that aligns with them.

Excited to share that I've completed my first semester in at The University of Texas at Dallas with a 4 GPA! It wasn't an easy decision for me to choose this major, but the professors at UTD have proved my decision right. I want to take a moment to reflect on the experiences I've had and thank each and every professor for providing top-notch knowledge. Under Professor Jason Parker I've done "Business Analytics with R" and under professorAysegul Toptal "Advanced Statistics for Data Science." Both courses went hand in hand in setting the foundation for a career in Data Analytics using R. While Advanced Statistics helped me understand the basics like regression and hypothesis testing in detail, BA with R had helped me understand how these concepts gets implemented with actual datasets along with the concepts of time series analysis, analysis for panel data, tree based models, clustering and my favourite PCA, the course uses wooldridge datasets for lectures and problem sets which helped me get hands on experience in understanding the concepts. "Database Foundations for Business Analytics" with Professor Gasan Elkhodari D.Eng. provided an in-depth overview of data management practices using SQL. We’ve used Postgres platform for the same. The course project was my personal favourite as we got to design and develop a database from scratch by creating the right ERD, DDL and DML. The project we had created is on house leasing.Out of personal interest, I took an elective "Financial Accounting" under Professor Yibin Zhou , and learned about the 4 types of financial reports, adjusting journal entries, and more. The last but not least, l’m very greatful for the course “Professional Development” which I’ve taken with professor Ariana Macias, MHA, CLSSBB. This course is really helpful for international students like me in understanding and preparing for the job market. From resume making, interview preparation to setting up the best LinkedIn profile, this course teaches us how to market ourselves right in the job market. The overall semester has boosted my confidence and motivation to move forward with my chosen career. Can't wait for what's to come in the next semester!

Completing my master's degree in Business Analytics at the University of North Texas has been a thrilling and transformative journey. As I reflect on the past few years, I am filled with a sense of accomplishment and excitement for the future. This program has not only deepened my understanding of data and analytics but has also equipped me with the tools and skills necessary to excel in my career. One of the most rewarding aspects of the program was the opportunity to master various analytical tools and languages. Tableau, for instance, has revolutionized my ability to visualize data. This powerful tool has enabled me to create interactive and insightful dashboards that can effectively communicate complex data trends and patterns to stakeholders. Power BI, another essential tool in my arsenal, has further enhanced my capability to generate robust business intelligence reports. These tools have allowed me to transform raw data into meaningful insights, facilitating better decision-making processes. In addition to these visualization tools, I have gained proficiency in several programming languages that are crucial for data analytics. Learning R has been particularly beneficial, as it is widely used for statistical analysis and data manipulation. The language's extensive libraries and packages have provided me with the flexibility to perform sophisticated data analyses and develop predictive models. Python, another versatile programming language, has also been a cornerstone of my education. Its simplicity and readability, combined with powerful libraries like Pandas and NumPy, have enabled me to handle large datasets and perform complex computations with ease. The curriculum at the University of North Texas has also included advanced courses in data analytics. These courses have given me a deeper understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of data analysis, as well as practical experience in applying these concepts to real-world problems. I have learned to use machine learning algorithms to uncover hidden patterns and trends in data, and to build models that can predict future outcomes with remarkable accuracy. The ability to leverage these advanced techniques has significantly enhanced my analytical capabilities and prepared me to tackle complex challenges in my career.Throughout my studies, I have had the opportunity to work on numerous projects that have allowed me to apply my skills in practical settings. These projects have ranged from analyzing customer behavior for a retail company to predicting financial market trends. Each project has provided valuable hands-on experience and has helped me to refine my analytical techniques. Moreover, collaborating with peers and professors has enriched my learning experience and has fostered a collaborative and supportive academic environment. As I graduate with a master's degree in Business Analytics, I am confident that the knowledge and skills I have acquired will be invaluable in my career.
